1 to 1 Laptop Program - BYOD

​From 2018 Cavendish Road State High School will gradually roll out BYOD for students in Years 10-12.  Students in years 7 – 9 will continue with the school owned 1-1 Laptop Program as part of the Student Resource Scheme.  

  • 2018 – all year 10 students and optional for year 12 students
  • 2019 – all year 10 and 11 students
  • 2020 – all year 10, 11 and 12 students
 

Laptops will need to meet specific requirements in order to connect to the school network.  Please see specifications below.  The school has links with three retailers as an option for parents purchasing a Bring Your Own (BYOD) device.  The use of these retailers is not mandatory and they are provided as a convenience for parents.  Links to the retailer websites are below on this page. 

Joining the program

An annual parental contribution of $100 will apply for the BYOD program. This is payable in full at the start of each school year.  Connection to the network will not be available until this fee is paid.  All students will be required to complete the BYOD Charter Agreement each year.
 

The annual fee contributes to the following items: 

  • BYOD Connection Licence
  • Technical support for connection and software access
  • Pool device for limited loan when BYOD device is non-functional
  • Software for your BYOD computer.

BYOD Devices Minimum Specifications  

WINDOWS MACHINES

 

General Purpose

These devices will be suitable for general purpose computing, excluding Video Editing and CAD.
 

Windows Machines (Entry Level/ General Purpose) – Core i5, 8GB Ram, Wireless Network 5.4Ghz., 500 GB HDD minimum, Battery sufficient to last 6 hours on Balanced Power Mode.  64bit Operating System (Windows 8.1, Windows 10)

Higher level
 

These devices will be suitable for higher level computing, including Video Editing and CAD

Windows Machines (CAD/Media) – Core i7, 8GB Ram, Wireless Network 5.4Ghz., 500 GB HDD, Battery sufficient to last 6 hours on Balanced Power Mode, 64bit Operating System (Windows 8.1, Windows 10)
 

HARD DRIVES: Many new laptop computers come with “SSD” hard drives which are smaller in capacity but faster than the traditional magnetic hard drives. For additional data storage, a good option is a robust, external USB3 hard drive.

MAC MACHINES

 

* NOTE for students with MAC’s studying Graphics Subjects *

Students studying Graphics subjects which require the use of CAD software (AutoCAD , REVIT, Inventor) will need to have a copy of windows on their MAC as well as OSx either as virtual machine or Dual Boot. The school can advise how to do this.

Higher level computing

Can I have an IPAD?

 

Students are expected to have a device sufficient for their curriculum needs as defined in the specifications on this page.

The new iPad Pro is currently being tested, and further information will be provided on its suitability at the Year 9 into 10 Subject Selection Evening on 15 August.  A selection of compatible devices will be available for viewing at this event.

Any previous iPad models (other than the new iPad Pro) are not considered as a suitable device due to:

  Significant text entry is required because the screen keyboards on these devices are not suitable for ergonomic large text input
 
 •  Some school software licenses (eg. Inventor) may not be supported by the iPad operating systmem.  This needs to be considered when students are choosing subjects.   

What devices are not supported?

 

Microsoft Surface RT – These devices are not compatible with BYOD solution.

Linux Devices – These devices are not compatible with BYOD solution.
 

Chromebooks  – These devices are not compatible with BYOD solution.

Android Tablets - These devices are not compatible with BYOD solution.

Vendor Portals – options to purchase

 

Three Vendor portals are now available as an option for parents purchasing a BYOD device. The use of these portals is not mandatory and they are provided by vendors as a convenience for parents. The school is not involved in the private transactions between parents and the vendors. The school does not accept deliveries on behalf of students/parents. Please ensure that online orders are sent to your home address.

ACER (Windows devices)

** Important Notes on this vendor**
 

This vendor provides student pricing which can be obtained by the use of a loyalty card. The card provides an access code for special pricing. Cards can be collected from Cavendish Road State High School Finance Office. Only one card per family is required.

This vendor also provides a rebate to the school for each purchase made in the name of Cavendish Road State High School.

Elearn - Blackboard Online Classroom
 
Elearn can be accessed from home by visiting http://elearn.eq.edu.au. Students can also install the BlackBoard Mobile app and use the search term "DETE" to find the Department of Education Queensland Learning Place code once the app has been installed. Students use their normal school login username and password to access the site.
