Instrumental Music Excellence Academy

In 2009, Cavendish Road SHS established a Music Excellence Program for Year 8 students. This selected group of students will enter our accelerated academic–music class which will offer the opportunity to work at an enhanced level through their musical studies and performances while maintaining an extended academic program.

Emphasis will be on music performance and studies. This class will practice as an ensemble and soloists in class time and perform at various school functions. The opportunity for private practice, work in small ensembles, master-classes with visiting musicians, conductors and clinicians will all be available. This will assist all students to reach their goals in the field of musical performance. Musicianship skills will be developed through the study of the AMEB’s music-craft curriculum.

This class is designed to encourage the pursuit of excellence through the perspectives of instrumental, music history and aural skills. It will also help students to develop a sense of professionalism and discipline in all their future endeavours.

Why instrumental music excellence?

The music excellence program was developed in response to growing numbers of students interested in taking music further.

A program was developed to challenge students to push themselves past the point of their perceived ability and respond to more complex and demanding tasks.

Intended outcomes for music excellence:

  • improved musical performance ability

  • enhancement of creativity through a composition focus

  • improved ICT skills in music

  • involvement in improving the music culture within the school
