Current Year 8 students can use their home computer or a school computer to complete their selections online.
Students are required to enter two preferences and one of these will be their chosen elective in 2010. Elective subjects are assigned on a first in basis.
Subject selection will open at 7am on Friday 6 November 2009.
ELECTIVE SUBJECT OUTLINES
Business – Financial Literacy
This subject will introduce you to the roles of consumers, business and the government in our society, how to make effective personal consumer decisions and how to understand the world of money. In Financial Literacy you will learn about your rights as a consumer, what you can do when you need to return items to a shop and where to get help if you run into problems. You will use the “Little Black Book of Scams” to find out about common scams and how to avoid them.
Handling money is an important part of life. In this subject you will learn how to budget for the things you want to buy and how to grow the money you have left over through savings and investment. You will also learn to pay bills and learn about the benefits and pitfalls of credit cards. You will participate in the Sharemarket Game which is a terrific way to learn how the share market works. You will be given a password will be allocated $50 000 to use to buy and sell shares in a simulated market over the internet. (You don’t get to keep the money)
Mobile phone plans will also be examined so that you can understand the contracts that you are entering into when you sign up to a monthly plan.
This subject is to help you understand your rights and responsibilities as a responsible member of society. It also leads on to our Year 10 subjects – Business Law and Business Management.

Sports Excellence Programs – Touch Football, Rugby League, Football & Netball
Student need to be currently enrolled in a sporting excellence program in Year 8 2009 to select this as one of their electives. Students who are not currently in a sporting excellence program will need to speak with the Sports Excellence Co-ordinator and trial to be considered for enrolment in 2010.
LOTE – Japanese
General description
The study of Japanese offers students the exciting opportunity to develop linguistic and cultural competencies. This will equip them to engage in the global community, the Asian-Pacific region as well as our local Australian diverse linguistic and cultural society. Students will develop an understanding of how language and culture affect their lives and acquire knowledge of the culture of the Japanese people.
Throughout the course students will:
- Develop an ability to communicate confidently and accurately focussing on the four macro skills of listening, reading, speaking and writing.
- Investigating a diverse range of topics including: family, neighbourhood and the international world.
- Focus on issues and information by collecting, organising, analysing and evaluating texts in order to sow multiply perspectives.

The four macro-skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing will be assessed throughout the semester, using diagnostic and formative tasks. Each macro-skill will be formally assessed by examination at the end of the semester.

Core Requirements
The completion of Year 9 German is highly recommended if students intend to study German in Year 10 and beyond, although those with background in the language will be given consideration on an individual basis.
Language opportunities at Cavendish Road SHS
- University bonus – Year 12 language students will be awarded bonus points towards their OP.
- University Links – Universities offer Year 12 students opportunities to attend second year German language HECS free while completing Year 12 German studies at our school
- German Exchange – Students studying German in years 10-12 are offered the opportunity to participate in a German Exchange program.
- Cultural Activities – Students of German enjoy annual cultural activities such as restaurant trips, film festivals, speech contests, university visits as well as school festivities such as our annual Oktoberfest celebration.
DRAMA
Drama is a course of study where one can develop skills as an actor, scriptwriter and director and engage in a range of roles and relationships, situations and contexts. It is a creative and largely practical subject that requires energy but also focus and motivation.
